Do you provide free quotes or estimates?

Let’s take a quick moment and define what a quote is. A quote provides a specific, non-negotiable price for a particular service or product. It’s based on the scope of work and materials required for a project and should be itemized to show a clear breakdown of costs involved. If accepted, it becomes an agreed upon price between two parties for a service that has yet to be rendered, not withstanding any unforeseen issues or changes.

 

For years I provided detailed quotes free of charge, for both commercial and residential projects. It needs to be understood that for something as simple as an estimate for a cooktop wall niche with a mosaic inlay design above your range could easily take an hour to determine what it should be accurately quoted at, and that's not taking into consideration the rest of the potential remodeling project. 

 

On a larger remodel project, a contractor will (or should) invest hours and hours of work doing measurements and takeoffs, communicating with their customer, installers, suppliers, architects, design team, product selection, the State, etc. in order to create an itemized quote. If a contractor is busy running around providing free quotes two or three times a day, that will most certainly have an impact on the current projects at hand. Additionally, an experienced contractor has acquired an immense amount of information over the years that could potentially save their clients tens of thousands of dollars in value and/or years of headaches down the road.

An estimate on the other hand is an approximation of the costs associated with a construction project based on the contractors experience. This is often provided in a "Good, Better, Best" format.
